On 2 July 2012, three months after Myanmar moved to a managed float, the [Central Bank of Myanmar](https://allratestoday.com/central-bank-rates-api/cbm/) published a reference rate of **878 kyat** per US dollar. On 23 October 2026 it published **2,100 kyat**, the same figure it has printed on every table since 5 August 2022. This article goes through the years in between using the bank's own reference rates: 3,429 daily tables, all of them in the AllRatesToday central-bank archive.

**What this series is.** The Central Bank of Myanmar publishes one reference rate per currency on each business day, for 38 currencies in kyat per unit. It is the official rate, and since August 2022 it has been held at a fixed figure for the dollar. It is not a market rate, and the gap between the two is the reason the official series matters for anything that has to cite a source: it is the number with a publication date attached.

## The shape of the series

### 2012 to 2014: a managed float near 1,000

The first two and a half years are the calmest in the series. The reference rate moved between 850 and about 1,050 kyat per dollar: 857 at the end of 2012, 987 at the end of 2013 and 1,026 at the end of 2014.

### 2015 to 2018: two depreciations

2015 was the first sharp year. The rate went from 1,025 to 1,309 kyat, a 28% rise, with the largest single step on 13 July 2015, when it went from 1,125 to 1,200. After a dip to 1,168 in April 2016 the rate settled near 1,360 for most of 2017. In 2018 it moved again, from 1,361 to 1,550, after peaking at 1,597 on 21 September 2018.

### 2019 and 2020: the kyat strengthens

For two years the movement reversed. The reference rate fell from 1,546 at the start of 2019 to 1,329.1 at the end of 2020, touching 1,279.5 on 9 October 2020, the strongest the kyat had been since October 2016.

### 2021 and 2022: the break

The table for 1 February 2021, the day of the military takeover, had 1,330 kyat per dollar. Two tables later it was 1,392.3. The rate kept climbing through the year, and on 29 September 2021 it jumped from 1,755 to 1,921.6, a 9.5% move in one day, before peaking at 1,986.4 on 5 October 2021. It ended the year at 1,778.

In 2022 the bank held the rate at 1,778 until the end of March, moved it to 1,850 on 4 April, and on 5 August 2022 set it at **2,100**, a 13.5% step. That figure has been on every table since: 1,015 consecutive tables up to 23 October 2026.

## Year by year: USD/MMK in the Central Bank of Myanmar's tables

"First" and "Last" are the first and last tables of the year; the low and high are the extremes of the daily series within that year.

The rows for 2023 to 2026 have identical first, last, low and high values because the published dollar rate did not change. The other 37 currencies in the table kept moving: the euro, for example, was 2,352 kyat on 23 October 2026.

## What the table looked like on 23 October 2026

A selection from the bank's 38-currency table, all in kyat per one unit:

| Currency | MMK per unit | Currency | MMK per unit |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| US dollar (USD) | 2,100 | Thai baht (THB) | 62.22 |
| Euro (EUR) | 2,352 | Chinese yuan (CNY) | 314.80 |
| British pound (GBP) | 2,810.33 | Indian rupee (INR) | 22.12 |
| Singapore dollar (SGD) | 1,643 | Japanese yen (JPY) | 13.389 |
| Australian dollar (AUD) | 1,474.83 | Korean won (KRW) | 1.5834 |
| Kuwaiti dinar (KWD) | 6,818.18 | Vietnamese dong (VND) | 0.0813 |

The bank quotes some currencies per 100 units on its own page, for example the yen and the won. The API divides those out so every rate is per one unit.

## Pulling any date from the archive

The latest table is free and needs no key:

```
GET https://allratestoday.com/api/open/central-bank/cbm
```

A specific past date returns the table the bank published that day. If the bank published nothing that day, the response carries the most recent earlier table and says so, instead of guessing:

```
GET https://allratestoday.com/api/v1/central-bank/cbm/2022-08-05?source=USD&target=MMK
Authorization: Bearer art_live_your_key
{
  "bank": "cbm",
  "requested_date": "2022-08-05",
  "rate_date": "2022-08-05",
  "published_on_requested_date": true,
  "source": "USD",
  "target": "MMK",
  "rate": 2100,
  "rate_type": "reference",
  "derived": false,
  ...
}
```

Leave off the pair parameters and the same call returns all 38 currencies from that day's table.

Or with the npm SDK:

```
import { getRatesForDate } from 'cbm-exchange-rate';
const day = await getRatesForDate('2022-08-05', { apiKey: process.env.ALLRATES_KEY });
const row = day.rates.find(r => r.base === 'USD' && r.quote === 'MMK');
console.log(day.rate_date, row.value); // 2022-08-05 2100
```

Historical dates and time series need a [paid plan](https://allratestoday.com/pricing/). The spoke page for the bank also has an Excel and CSV download for any date range from 2 July 2012, and the same archive is in the open [central-bank exchange rates dataset](https://allratestoday.com/blog/central-bank-exchange-rates-dataset-hugging-face/) under a CC BY-NC 4.0 licence for research and non-commercial use.

**Need the official kyat rate for a document?** For customs, audit and tax purposes the figure to cite is the bank's published reference rate for the date, with that date stored next to it.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the Central Bank of Myanmar's official exchange rate for the US dollar?

2,100 kyat per dollar. The bank's reference rate has been 2,100 on every table from 5 August 2022 to 23 October 2026, 1,015 tables in a row. It is the rate the bank publishes, which is not the same as the rate in Myanmar's market.

### When did the Central Bank of Myanmar set the rate at 2,100 kyat?

On 5 August 2022. The table for 4 August 2022 had 1,850 kyat per dollar; the next table had 2,100, a 13.5% step. The rate has not moved since.

### What was the kyat exchange rate in 2012?

The AllRatesToday archive starts on 2 July 2012, when the Central Bank of Myanmar's reference rate was 878 kyat per dollar. The strongest kyat in the series is 850 per dollar on 2 November 2012.

### Why are there gaps in April every year?

The bank publishes on business days, and Myanmar closes for the Thingyan water festival and New Year in mid-April. The archive shows a gap of 11 to 13 days in April most years for that reason. For any date in a gap, the API returns the last table published before it and flags that the bank did not publish on the requested date.

### Can I get the Central Bank of Myanmar rate for a past date?

Yes, for any date from 2 July 2012. The rates-for-date endpoint returns the table in force on that date for all 38 currencies the bank lists. The latest table is free; historical dates need a paid plan.
