Live rates come from institutional foreign exchange market data: true mid-market, with no spread added by us. Official rates are ingested from each central bank's or tax authority's own publication and served unmodified with its publication date — see the full list of institutions and data sources.

In addition to real-time mid-market rates, we publish official reference rates from 122 central banks — including the US Federal Reserve, European Central Bank, Bank of England, People's Bank of China, and Bank of Japan. The latest published rates are available on every plan, including Free. Historical central bank rates and time-series data are included in all paid plans.
Market rates are refreshed every 60 seconds on every plan, including Free — many providers update hourly or daily. Official central-bank and tax-authority rates update when each institution publishes, and every response carries the publication date.

The free API key is designed for personal and non-commercial use. For production applications, upgrade to a paid plan which includes commercial use rights and higher limits. The one exception is keyless use (see below).
Yes. The open ECB endpoint (/api/open/latest/{BASE}), the drop-in compatibility endpoints under /api/compat/ and the embeddable widgets need no key and may be used commercially, as long as every page or screen showing the data carries a visible, followable link: <a href="https://allratestoday.com">Exchange rates by AllRatesToday</a>. Other keyless data (public central-bank tables, the open dataset) needs the same link and is for non-commercial use. See terms §3.4. With a paid API key, attribution is not required (except on public displays).
You'll receive a 429 status code with rate limit headers until your quota resets at the start of the next month — there are no overage charges, so you are never billed more than your plan price. We email you at 90% and 100% of your quota so you can upgrade in time.
