What this series is. The Central Bank of Kuwait publishes one exchange table per business day, about 134 currencies in dinars per unit. Since May 2007 the dinar has been pegged to an undisclosed basket of currencies, so its dollar rate drifts slowly as the dollar moves against the other currencies in the basket. Rates below are dinars per dollar; divide 1 by the figure for dollars per dinar.

The shape of the series

2008: the strongest dinar

The archive opens a few months after the move to the basket peg, with the dollar weak worldwide. On 27 May 2008 the bank published 0.2646 dinars per dollar, about 3.78 dollars per dinar, the strongest the dinar has been in the series. The year ended at 0.27595 as the dollar recovered during the financial crisis, and 2009 ended at 0.2868.

2010 to 2014: between 0.27 and 0.29

For five years the rate stayed in a narrow range. Its low in that period was 0.2718 on 29 August 2011 and its high 0.2932 on 7 June 2010. At the end of 2014 it was 0.2928.

2015: the step to 0.30

The broad dollar rally of 2014 and 2015 lifted the rate from 0.2805 in May 2014 to 0.3044 in November 2015. It opened 2015 at 0.2934 and closed it at 0.3035. It has not been back below 0.298 since.

2016 to 2026: a band about 0.012 wide

Every daily rate from 2016 onward sits between 0.29825 (11 February 2016) and 0.3108 (28 September 2022), the weakest point in the series, when the dollar was at a 20-year high against the euro. In 2026 the rate has moved between 0.30475 and 0.3083.

Pulling any date from the archive

The latest table is free and needs no key:

GET https://allratestoday.com/api/open/central-bank/cbk

A specific past date returns the table the bank published that day. If the bank published nothing that day, the response carries the most recent earlier table and says so, instead of guessing:

GET https://allratestoday.com/api/v1/central-bank/cbk/2022-09-28?source=USD&target=KWD
Authorization: Bearer art_live_your_key

{
  "bank": "cbk",
  "requested_date": "2022-09-28",
  "rate_date": "2022-09-28",
  "published_on_requested_date": true,
  "source": "USD",
  "target": "KWD",
  "rate": 0.3108,
  "rate_type": "reference",
  "derived": false,
  ...
}

Leave off the pair parameters and the same call returns all 134 currencies from that day's table.

Or with the npm SDK:

import { getRatesForDate } from 'cbk-exchange-rate';

const day = await getRatesForDate('2022-09-28', { apiKey: process.env.ALLRATES_KEY });
const row = day.rates.find(r => r.base === 'USD' && r.quote === 'KWD');
console.log(day.rate_date, row.value); // 2022-09-28 0.3108

Historical dates and time series need a paid plan. The spoke page for the bank also has an Excel and CSV download for any date range from 2008, and the same archive is in the open central-bank exchange rates dataset under a CC BY-NC 4.0 licence for research and non-commercial use.

Converting dinar invoices? At three dollars to the dinar, a fourth decimal place matters. Use the bank's published rate for the document date at full precision and store the publication date with it.
