The Maldives Monetary Authority publishes the official exchange rates that accounting, tax, and customs rules in the Maldives reference — published official rates, not moving market prices. This guide shows how to pull them as JSON: via a REST endpoint or the zero-dependency maldives-monetary-authority-exchange-rate npm package.

What the MMA publishes

• The daily USD reference rate in rufiyaa — 15.42 per US dollar on 7 September 2026, the figure Maldivian customs, the revenue authority and the banks convert at.
• A banded peg, as the MMA prints it — the rufiyaa is held within a band around 15.42 per dollar, so the series has moved only a handful of times since 2011 (from 14.75).
• US dollar only — the one pair that matters in an economy where resorts price in dollars and settle in rufiyaa; other currencies exist only as a monthly table.
• History back to April 2011 in our API, with the authority's own date on every response; the MMA publishes seven days a week.

For Maldivian tax, customs and audit work the number that counts is not the market dollar but the MMA reference rate in force on the transaction date — and because it is a band, the rare day it moves is exactly the day an accountant needs the dated record.

Why official rates, not market rates

A live mid-market feed answers "what is USD/MVR trading at right now?" — the right tool for checkouts and dashboards. But accountants, auditors, and tax authorities ask a different question: "which rate were you required to use for this date?" That answer comes from the Maldives Monetary Authority's published rates, and it never changes after publication.

Published vs derived pairs

If the MMA does not print a pair directly, the API resolves it from the bank's published rates — an inverse, or a cross rate via MVR — and flags it derived: true with the method used. Official and computed values are never silently mixed, which is exactly the distinction an auditor will ask about.

Fifteen years of the reference rate

Our archive starts on 21 April 2011, the day the MMA moved from a hard 12.85 peg to the managed band, and runs through every published day since — a flat series punctuated by the steps to 15.42. For a past invoice date, one call returns the rate in force.
